Month of racing around…
This post was written by John Murphy on May 15, 2009
I just got back to Temecula this week after a 3 weeks of racing on the road. It all started April 17th at the Battenkill Race weekend. This race is pretty sweet with lots of dirt roads. Saturday was a pro/am warmup race with the main race being Sunday. 200km of dirt roads is pretty much unlike all the other races we have here in the US. It was a lot of fun fighting for position before the dirt sections and in the end our team put Karl Menzies in 2nd place.
After the race I headed down to Athens, GA, where I’ve called home for the last 3 years for Twilight. I got to stay there the week before and catch up with friends. On Friday there was the grid qualifiers for Saturday nights Crit. Basically they set 8 computrainers up on a stage in downtown athens, program 6 laps of the 1km crit course and run heats all day for the racers to qualify for the top 8 to compete in the finals. At 10pm that night the best 8 times of the entire day race for a bit of prize money in front of a cheering downtown crowd. Pretty cool if you ask me except for the trainer riding part of it haha. But if you want to know what it takes to win the 6km TT in the form of watts take a guess… I won the finals with a time of 7:17 I think.
So all that for a call up on Saturday. Which is nice cause nearly 200 guys + racing inside of a HUGE crowd= LOTS OF CRASHES. As always there was a nasty pileup in the first turn in the first lap. Check it on youtube!
So I was in a break the first half of the race with Kyle Wamsley from Colavita, then I was in the next immediate break with the 5 guys in the youtube video. After that I was sorta cooked and missed group of 3 that got away until the finish. I think I finished 13th. Great. Oh well that’s how it goes.
We spend the rest of the week driving all over GA, SC, and AL. We raced the entire speedweek which was highlighted by staying at the HOTEL 12, www.twelvehotels.com, in Atlanta, GA. Friend of mine Ron Potter runs the show there and hooked us up with a couple of the best rooms I’ve ever stayed in. Thanks Ron!
After the week of racing and driving all around with the crits, we headed to Arkansas for Joe Martin for the final leg of this racing road trip. I arrived to find a new KUOTA race bike for me which was nice. Took it for a test run on the first day TT and it went pretty good. I winded up going 15 seconds faster than the year before on the uphill TT so that’s pretty good. Rory had a good TT and he went on to win the overall. Check his blog for race report.

Making my way to Cali.

Got into Temecula Thursday afternoon to the Team Ouch house. I wasn’t sure what the house would be like but knowing Brent, the owner of Ouch, I knew it would be cool. Here are a few pics of what is going to be my new home for a while.
View from back yard. Big Bear Mtn to the right.
View from my bedroom.
New House, New bike…

Operation Altitude Training…
This post was written by John Murphy on December 24, 2008
So I just got my altitudetech tent up a bit ago and started sleeping in it last week. I did a bit of playing around with the altitude tent last year and decided that this year I was gonna take it to another level with this new setup. I can fit a king size mattress inside and the compressor is quite quiet and pleasant sounding. It gets up to 8500 ft in about an hour and I actually sleep like a baby inside. Give it a shot I’m sure you’ll like the outcome. Check out www.altitudetech.ca

Getting it started for 09′
This post was written by John Murphy on November 27, 2008
Well, to get started with a new blog I’m really not sure where to begin, so I’m just gonna start in with what’s going on right now and let that be that. I just got back home this morning after being on the road for the last couple weeks. We did a bit of an intro team camp for our new team OUCH presented by MAXXIS in Asheville the week before last. It was a ton of fun with a few of the boys that have been my with me on Health Net the last couple years as well as one other rider who is new to the team. We hit the bikes every morning and kept the nights filled with entertainment as well. Let’s call the entertainment “Bowling.”
Anyhow it was good times and right after a good week there I took myself to Tucson Arizona do yet another week of the same with my coach Jason Tullous. He was hosting a CTS endurance camp there in preparation for the oh so popular ‘El Tour De Tucson.’ I mean I guess it’s popular if you consider 9,000 bike riders on a start line a lot… The camp was a week long and included some detailed power analysis and all that good stuff. It was pretty cool meeting all the athletes that came from all over North America for the camp and the tour. I was plesantly surprised with how my legs were and aside from the food poisoning(?) I got on Wednesday it was an extremely successful trip. The Tour de Tucson went pretty even though I cramped spectacularly in the final 40 miles… It could have been from the food poisoning, but who can tell.
Anyhow I just got back to Athens for the night before I head to NC to have Thanksgiving with the fam tmrw. Once the holiday is all said and done I’ll finally settle into a good block of training at home. Ok that was a lot but it seems like I’ve been somewhat busy for the couple weeks… so I’m looking forward to having this one day at home. Well I could go into my background a bit but I think I’ll save that for later posts.
